FAXCOM for SMTP Description

With a FAXCOM Server and FAXCOM for SMTP software, network users can transmit and receive MIME-encoded email messages to/from remote Group 3 fax machines. The FAXCOM for SMTP application works in conjunction with the Microsoft SMTP service, which is installed as part of Microsoft’s Internet Information Services (IIS) running on Windows 2000 systems (including the FAXCOM server).

To send an email message to a fax machine, your users simply address a standard email message in the required syntax. They can include up to 20 file attachments with the message, broadcast one message to multiple recipients, and receive fax transmission status messages (for their sent faxes) as email messages.

Because the procedures for sending a fax message are the same as sending an email message, users do not need to learn any special procedures to use FAXCOM for SMTP. They use their SMTP mail client application (Outlook Express, Netscape Messenger, Eudora) to send fax messages as they do email messages. From the addressing string entered by the users, FAXCOM for SMTP composes a cover page and extracts the remote fax machine phone number.

At a minimum, the addressing string entered by users must include the destination fax number and the domain name used for faxing. At a maximum, the addressing string can include values that override system defaults and enable users to specify such options as fax resolution, time of transmission, specific cover page to use, transmission priority, and whether transmission status reports are returned for all faxes, successfully transmitted faxes only, or failed faxes only.
