Traditionally, (3-PL) Third Party Logistics providers have been part of an organization, which also has other responsibilities such as: transportation, warehousing, freight forwarding, etc. These third party logistics providers are commonly referred to as asset-based providers. Another type of third party logistics provider is emerging, this trend setter is the customized logistics service provider, which designs, develops, and manages customer-specific tailored solutions.
In terms of growth, it is forecasted that the third-party logistics market will continue to grow on an explosive basis. One reason for this has to do with the large amount of overseas manufacturing, particularly in Asia-Pacific and the need to receive and warehouse these products in the U.S. in the West Coast and to provide value-added operations and services such as repackaging, light assembly, kitting, etc before shipping the products directly to U.S. customers. Other reasons have to do with the flexibility, operational and cost advantages of third party logistics over similar in-house operations. The growth of third party warehousing is nation-wide as well as international.
